STUDY IN THE REASONS AND SOLUTIONS OF THE HIGH RATE OF TURNOVER IN NON-GOVERNMENT ORGANISATIONS

Abstract

Unplanned staff turnover is causing a lot of problems and consume resources. This started to affect the ability to learn and the efficiency of organizations, as well as the capacity of NGOs to respond to new emergencies. Recently, staff turnover turned to be a major concern for NGOs. Some suggest that staff turnover is a reality that we should live with, but it has also been blamed for reducing the effectiveness of programs. In explaining excessive staff turnover, some refers to donors’ tendency on allowing low overheads, which encourage short-term contracts through short funding periods and making it difficult to work on staff development. Others see it as the result of outside factors which cannot be controlled. However, this research argues that organization should accept the responsibility for the current situation. One of the first steps is to start collecting and studying key human resource indicators so that decisions can be based on evidence. Success in addressing depends on the accepting of problems by top management, and to be ready to invest time, support and funding to understand the causes, find solutions and correctly implement them.
